Apple's iPhone Duo and the 2026 OLED iPad mini both put a relatively large screen in a portable device. The Duo is a foldable phone with a 7.6-inch inner display; the mini is an 8.5-inch tablet. If you already carry an iPhone and use a mini mainly for reading or browsing, the Duo raises a reasonable question: could one device replace both? The answer depends less on the diagonal measurements than on the apps, accessories, and phone functions you use.

As of November 2, 2026, the Duo is available in Canada, while the new OLED mini is due to reach customers on November 6. This comparison uses Apple's Duo announcement, its Duo specifications, and the 2026 mini specifications. Availability, software support, and prices can change, so check the current Canadian listings before buying.

The quick distinction

The Duo is an iPhone first. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer screen for calls, messages, navigation, photos, and everyday phone tasks. Opened, its 7.6-inch display gives those same iOS apps more room, including Apple's Split View for two compatible apps. It keeps a phone number, cellular connection, full iPhone camera system, and MagSafe accessories in one device.

The mini is a small iPad running iPadOS. Its 8.5-inch OLED screen is a single, flat workspace rather than a display that folds away. It supports iPad-specific apps and workflows, Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), and a choice of Wi-Fi-only or cellular hardware. It is not a replacement for a conventional phone: a cellular iPad provides mobile data, but it does not become an iPhone with the same native calling and SMS setup.

Reading, browsing, and watching video

For an article, ebook, map, or web page, the Duo's unfolded screen is considerably more useful than a standard phone screen. When you finish, it folds into a device that can live in a pocket. Someone who dislikes carrying a separate tablet may value that convenience more than the remaining screen-size difference.

The mini still offers more display area, and its uninterrupted flat panel is easier to position in a stand or hold for a long reading session. The Duo has a visible and tactile fold area, and the inner screen's shape may put black bars around some video. Neither diagonal measurement tells you how large a movie or two-page book layout will actually appear; app layout and aspect ratio also count. If reading is the primary use, compare the devices with the books or websites you normally open. Our iPad versus Kindle reading guide covers a different but related choice.

Apps and multitasking are not the same

Apple added Split View to the Duo so two supported iPhone apps can appear side by side on the inner screen. That can make a familiar task, such as referring to a message while checking a map or copying information between apps, more comfortable than on a narrow phone. Some developers have adapted their interfaces for the foldable display; others may still use a phone-style layout with extra space. Check the particular apps you rely on rather than assuming every app behaves like its iPad version.

The mini runs iPadOS 27 and offers the tablet versions of many apps, a larger keyboard area, and iPad multitasking controls. For document review, notes beside a browser, drawing, or regular work with files, that environment can be more useful than a larger iPhone interface. Conversely, if your daily software is built around iPhone-only apps and you rarely need tablet tools, the Duo avoids maintaining a second device. A larger display does not make iOS and iPadOS interchangeable.

Apple Pencil and handwriting

The mini is the clearer choice for someone who writes or draws frequently today. Apple's specifications list support for both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Pencil Pro adds capabilities such as pressure-sensitive drawing and squeeze controls in supported apps. Confirm the exact Pencil model when buying an accessory, especially if you already own one.

Apple also lists Apple Pencil (USB-C) support for the Duo, but its Canadian Duo product page says the feature is coming later in 2026. As of this article's publication, that is an announced future feature, not one to assume works on a purchased Duo. Apple Pencil Pro is not listed as supported. If handwriting is central to the purchase, wait for the feature to ship and verify the relevant software version and app support before treating the Duo as a mini substitute.

Portability, cameras, and connectivity

Apple lists the Duo at 254 grams and the Wi-Fi OLED mini at 255 grams. Their weights are remarkably close, but their carrying patterns differ. The Duo folds for a pocket; the mini usually needs a bag, jacket pocket, or protective sleeve. The Duo is thicker when closed, and an added case changes either device's feel. Try to compare the complete setup, not just the bare-device measurements.

The Duo also handles tasks the mini does not handle in the same way: it is your phone, has 5G and GPS as part of that role, supports eSIM, and offers Apple's 48MP Fusion camera system. A mini can take photos and scan documents, but it is less convenient as an everyday camera. On the other hand, the mini can be a useful independent second screen while your phone remains available for calls or navigation. The Wi-Fi mini needs a nearby network or a phone hotspot when away from home; the cellular mini requires its own compatible plan. Our Wi-Fi versus cellular iPad guide explains the trade-off.

Price and the used-device alternative

Apple's Canadian starting prices at launch are C$2,999 for the 256GB Duo, C$949 for a 128GB Wi-Fi OLED mini, and C$1,149 for a 128GB cellular mini. Those are different storage configurations, and taxes, accessories, plans, promotions, and later price changes are not included. A Duo replaces the phone and potentially the tablet, so comparing its price only with a mini misses the cost of the phone you would otherwise use. Comparing it with a phone plus mini is more useful.

If you already have a suitable iPhone, adding a mini may cost far less than replacing the phone with a Duo. A used iPhone and a previous-generation mini can also be a less expensive two-device setup, subject to actual condition and availability. Conversely, a buyer who is replacing an expensive phone anyway and strongly prefers one device may place more value on the Duo's folding screen. Our OLED mini versus A17 Pro mini comparison can help if you are considering the previous iPad generation.

Which should you choose?

The Duo can replace a mini for someone whose tablet use is mostly reading, browsing, video, and occasional side-by-side iPhone apps, provided the smaller inner screen and much higher price are acceptable. It is particularly practical when carrying one phone-sized device is the priority. The mini remains the more direct choice for sustained tablet work, iPad apps, a larger flat display, and Pencil use available now.

Before buying, list the three tasks you use a tablet for most often and check how each works on iOS versus iPadOS. If the Duo would replace an existing phone, compare the full cost of one new foldable with a phone-and-iPad combination. If you are buying used, verify model identity, storage, condition, and Activation Lock rather than deciding from the form factor alone. The best fit is the one that handles your regular tasks without paying for a second screen you rarely open.
